Pune An unidentified person has stolen personal information of 13 Citibank credit card holders and then misused it for withdrawing money to the tune of Rs 3.73 lakh through online transactions.

Ronesh Bholanath Raut, the investigation officer at Citibank’s Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, lodged the complaint at the Cantonment police station on Tuesday. The cyber crime cell of Pune police is investigating the case.

Police said 13 Citibank customers -- Kaushik Mustafi, Kalidas Sinha, Kanchan Kulkarni, Sandhya Gupta, Shantanu Mahapatra, Nananda Joglekar, Manasi Agarwal, Manoj Prithani, Vikram Deshpande, Manoj Zalte, Kavita Chutni, Amraiti Bucha and Namita Sinha -- had lodged complaint with the bank that money was withdrawn from their accounts between September and November 2009 through online transaction without their knowledge.

Police said all the 13 complainants had purchased items from a shopping mall in Camp before their money was withdrawn. And later on, they found that a few thousands were also withdrawn from their bank accounts.

Police said that Citibank initiated an internal investigation into the matter and the investigation confirmed that its customers were cheated and the bank officials lodged a complaint with the police.

Police inspector Sangita Shinde of cyber crime cell, who is investigating the case, said, “It is suspected that someone working with the shopping mall in Camp stole the credit card information of these 13 persons. Investigation is on to identify the suspect,” she said.

“The suspect misused the credit card information of the customers and withdrew Rs 3,73,102 in 15 to 18 transactions. Bank has returned this money to its customers,” she added.
