In all, the school offers three courses including the liberal education course for the undergraduate students. The school of communication and school of business offer post- graduate courses. The courses in liberal education are affiliated to Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, while the post-graduate courses have the approval of AICTE, the sanctioning authority.
Presently, there are 197 students enrolled with the institute for these three courses.
The institute has invested Rs 70 crore as an initial input for the setting up of the campus. “The total investment will be Rs 400 crore. Around 80 per cent of this will come from the fees and other part will come in the form of endowment,” said Parag Shah, founder-chairman FLAME.
“The concept of liberal education is new to the country, but it is a very effective way of learning. Students can choose the subjects they like from a bank of subjects. They can even learn it for the duration of their own choice. We are offering 72 subjects for the students including traditional subjects like philosophy, political science and non-conventional subjects like creative writing and performing arts. The idea behind the whole exercise is to create leaders,” said Indira Parikh, president of the school. “The business administration and the communication course also include 25 per cent of liberal education,” she added.
Shah further said that since they have academic autonomy, they also have some industry people on the board of studies.
Some faculty from the industry will also be teaching in the institute.
“We are planning collaborations with Cambridge, Liverpool and Manchester University. We are also in talks with some 50 companies for the campus interviews and some them have shown their readiness to place our students,” said Shah.
He added that there were plans to start a school of sports and a school of art and design in the near future.
“The syllabus is ready and we are waiting for recognition by the university grants commission. We are even planning to get deemed university status for the institute,” he said.
