Rs 5 cr sanctioned for potato freight subsidy

Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister Punjab Parkash Singh Badal has sanctioned a corpus fund of Rs 5 crore from the rural development fund (RDF) for operating a freight subsidy of Rs 400 per tonne for marketing of potatoes within India and Rs 1,500 per tonne for export.

This was disclosed today by Chief Secretary R.I. Singh at a meeting with officials of the Department of Agriculture, Markfed, Mandi Board and representatives of the Associations of Potato Growers of Punjab. While addressing the meeting, Singh said the subsidy would be administered by Markfed. He added that the Punjab government was aware of the fact that potato farmers were facing a challenging situation.

Punjab to export potato to Middle-East
With a view to provide immediate relief to potato growers, the Punjab government has decided to export 3,000 metric tonnes of potato to the Middle-East besides another two lakh MT to states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu through Markfed. Addressing a press conference on Monday, Punjab Cooperation Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh said a team of Markfed officials had already been to Dubai to finalise the export of potato.
