While Pune railway station is among the 22 stations that the Central Railway has proposed to upgrade to “world class facilities,” the planning is still to begin. The current expenditure is intended to just smarten up the basic infrastructure at the station. “The tendering process for the flooring work on platforms 2, 3 and 6 should be over in three months. The work ought to be completed in the coming financial year,” said a senior railway official. The flooring on platforms 1, 7 and 4, 5 will also be completed. “Retiring rooms and toilets will be improved,” said the official.
Work on the second-class gate now in process will be completed “within three months,” said railway PRO Yogendra K Singh. While the Pune, Shivajinagar, Khadki, Pimpri and Chinchwad are among the 18 stations which already have installed Unreserved Ticket System, which allows passengers to obtain general compartment tickets three days in advance, 30 other stations in the division will see new UTS machines installed this year. They include Urali Kanchan, Nira, Jejuri, Karad and Loni. Since last April, plasma TVs and inquiry booths have been installed at the station for passenger convenience, said Singh. This year, additional booth indicators, especially on platform 6, would be added, he said.
