Kolkata, February 16 A local Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) worker was shot at and then hacked to death by four miscreants at Hatpukuria in Sheikhpura area of South 24 Parganas on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 8 am when Taher Mondol (38), a resident of Sheikhpura, was drinking tea at a shop in neighbouring Hatpukuria.

Four armed men arrived at the spot and shot at him from close range. When Mondol tried to flee, they caught him and hacked him to death with sharp weapons.

None of the local residents came to his help, police said.

A murder case has been initiated by the police.

“There may be a local gang involved. The body has been for postmortem,” said Pravin Kumar, District Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas.

Mondol, who was a CPM worker, had joined the RSP recently and was also part of a local protest movement against gambling.
