Proper implementation of the RTI Act is yet to be done in the state due to the lack of transparency in government offices, which dissuades the information officers to disclose all the information one has asked for. Even people are not aware of the procedure of filing an RTI and its operations. Several NGOs have, therefore, initiated public awareness programmes.
The stall on RTI displays many books, manuals, posters and flow charts on the procedures of filing an RTI and how the Act functions. The stall is attracting many visitors everyday. The stall organisers are also offering their assistance to the visitors. Apparently, the organisers are very happy with the initial response they received. People are visiting the stall to understand the process of filing an RTI application and obtaining information.
“The main purpose of the stall is to reach out to the common mass and spread awareness about the Act,” said Amitava Chowdhury, coordinator, NCPRI. “So far, we have received good response from the people who are coming to us with their questions and various problems. We are trying to assist them as much as possible,” added Chowdhury.
For enhancing the effect of the RTI and to drag more visitors to the stall, the stall holders have also set up 10 hoardings at various important crossings in the city, including Shyambazar five point crossing, Girish Park, Sealdah Station, Rasbehari crossing, Park Street crossing and Parama Island.
