In 1994, he was arrested in a burglary case in New Alipore and was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. Later, out on bail he was held accused in another robbery case in 1995 by the Garden Reach police, but remained absconding.
In 1996, he murdered a person during a robbery in a grocery shop. A case in this regard was lodged at the Tollygunge police station. In 1996 he was arrested, tried in both the cases and convicted. In the Garden Reach case he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and in the other case he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
However, while a trial was on in the Alipore court in 1998, he fled from police custody after hurling bombs on the court premises. In December the same year, he was rearrested and sent to Dum Dum Central Jail.
After 10 years, in August 17, 2009, he fled while being brought to a dental college on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road near Sealdah. Today he was picked up from Topsia by the detective department of Kolkata police.
“Chachu, a resident of Akra in South 24-Parganas, was arrested when he came to borrow money from a person at Topsaia. We had the information and picked him up,” said Damayanti Sen, Deputy Commissioner, Detective Department.
