Sacred Spirit

The material world was shut out as the International Festival of Sacred Arts got underway on Thursday with the haunting sounds of Jewish music. Crowds packed the Attic in Connaught Place to listen to Russian singer Anna Hoffman who was accompanied by Delhi-based music group Da Saaz on instruments ranging from the violin to an Iranian flute. Hoffman has established a reputation and a sizeable fan following in Delhi with past performances while Da Saaz has earned its fame the hard way—through superb gigs and a soulful CD called Jet Lag.

It didn’t matter that the language of the songs on Thursday was Hebrew and Ladino, a “dying language spoken by Jews who settled in Spain in the medieval period. It is similar to medieval Spanish with Hebrew influences, and there are only a handful of old people who still speak the words,” said Hoffman. The songs were derived from the Hebrew bible and other sacred texts, but the tunes were mostly from the Sephardic community of jews who settled in Mediterranean and North African countries. Sabaath prayers occupied most of Hoffman’s repertoire, though she included 10th century poems by Dunash ben Labrat as well as biblical chanting of Jews when they were leaving Egypt. A classical musician, Hoffman will next be heard in India when her collaborative album with Da Saaz releases later this year.
