Junagadh BJP members protest to ‘rescue’ children ‘caught’ by cops for rehabilitation

The Junagadh unit of BJP embarked on a ‘rescue mission’ on Saturday to ‘set free’ a bunch of children from the ‘clutches’ of the local police. They staged a dharna and blocked traffic at the Kalwi junction, only to later realise that the children were picked up for rehabilitation.

Senior Junagadh police officers said they had received instructions from the CID (Crime) Women’s Cell to rescue children found begging and rehabilitate them.

Superintendent of Police Hari Krishna Patel spotted a group of such children in the Bhavnath Taleti area at the foot of the Girnar Mountain and instructed his staff to take them to the women police station at Kalwa Chowk. In the meantime, some locals saw the children at the police station and informed the BJP leaders, suspecting some foul play.

Without verifying things, slogan-shouting BJP activists rushed to the police station and demanded their immediate release. Despite repeated appeals by the on-duty constables, the activists staged a dharna.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot to brief the workers about the welfare programme for such children. Finally, wiser counsel prevailed and the embarrassed BJP leaders called off the agitation. Amrut Desai, general secretary, BJP city unit, told Newsline that their intentions were good. “We thought the police were harassing these children.”
