Pune Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, which has received as many as 10 Oscar nominations, is facing stiff opposition from Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS), a saffron outfit.

The Samiti has launched a nationwide campaign, demanding a ban on Slumdog Millionaire, which the organisation claims has shown Indian culture and Lord Ram in poor light.

“The film shows Hindus killing and burning Muslims. It gives out a message that Hindus are cruel. Also, the movie is full of exaggerated scenes portraying India as a country ridden with extreme poverty, communal riots, prostitution and other negative aspects,” Sarang Akolkar, the Pune co-ordinator of HJS, told a news conference on Friday.

“We strongly object to a Hindu-Muslim riot scene in the film, where a Muslim boy named Jamal — who is also the hero of this film — is shown running away in great fear after having a look at a child dressed as Lord Ram. The scene is disrespectful towards Lord Ram, hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus,” Akolkar said.

HJS spokesperson Sunil Ghanwat said: “We have filed complaints against Slumdog Millionaire at the Shivajinagar and Vishrambag police stations in the city. We will be requesting all theatre owners in Pune to stop screening of the movie. We have also launched an online signature campaign against the movie.”

“We condemn the Censor Board for giving a go-ahead to Slumdog Millionaire. We want certain scenes to be deleted. Otherwise the movie should be banned. If the movie continues to be shown, we will intensify our agitation,” Ghanwat said.

Indians must realize what the truth is by abhinav on 31 Jan 2009

Even now people are under impression that the movie will uplift the social status of India , but the truth is that it declines the status of India. The language used by prostitutes is also abusive.Oscar nominations are not license to denigrate Hindu gods.Thats why u see many foreigners visiting Dharavi slums instead of visiting other places in Mumbai this days.

Hindu Jagruti Samiti by Arindam on 31 Jan 2009

I think this nonsensical outfit should keep their twisted opinions to themselves. They don't have a clue about what's happening in India's cities and this movie has shown one side of it. If they think Boyle was 'wrong', they should get their heads examined. But then, it would be a colossal waste of time for our psychologists to treat imbeciles when their services are needed elsewhere.
