Mumbai SAI Digital Planet defeated Micro Finance 12-9 in a thrilling contest to bag the crown in the Aakar Foundation kabaddi tournament at Bal Gandharva maidan in Vikhroli on Monday. A deep penultimate raid by Kumar Naik yielded three valuable points for the winners, who were trailing 8-9 at that stage. Meanhile, in the women’s final Railway Police came back strongly with substitute Meenakshi Shinde single-handedly setting the cat amongst the pigeons in the Chembur Kreeda Kendra’s ranks. The lanky Meenakshi helped her team win convincingly by 18-11, after they trailed 5-7 at the break.

The third final in the tournament saw Chembur Kreeda Kendra overcome Jai Bhawani in a tense action-packed final of the first division in the men’s section. Nitish Ugale did the star turn for the winners securing three points in a raid to tie the match 15-15 with four minutes left on the clock. Devendra Kadam’s desperate effort to get the lead and probably the winning point proved costly, as he was trapped and Chembur pocketed another point to seal victory.

In the Sai Digital -Micro Finance match Ugale, who ended up with the player of the tournament award, had brought his team within sniffing distance of the title with his all-round display and Ramchandra Haldar had turned the tide from a 1-4 deficit at the break, till Kumar Naik stepped in to do the eventual damage to Micro Finance’s cause. Hrishikesh Mamunkar and Aatish Sawant played good supporting roles to enable Sai Digital achieve their ultimate goal.

Meenakshi came in as a substitute in the women’s final, with Chembur Kreeda threatening to run away with the match. But she changed the tide by scoring three points in two successive raids for the Railway girls to narrow the gap. Chembur retaliated with Shubhangi Kamble to wrest the lead at 5-4. That was before Meenakshi sealed the issue by helping her team give a lona to Chembur for a 13-7 lead.
