New Delhi Holi revelry claimed the life of a man who was stabbed by four others after he objected to them throwing colours on his employer’s wife. Police said the incident took place on Wednesday near Lions Hospital in New Friends Colony of South East Delhi.

All four accused — Krishnan, Ravi and two 17-year-old boys — have been arrested. Krishnan and Ravi worked as safai karamcharis. All the accused lived in the same locality.

According to the police, 25-year-old Rahisuddin, a tailor, was on his way to Taimur Nagar with his employer, Siraj Ahmed, on his motorcycle when the incident took place. Ahmed’s wife and another relative, Sajid, were following them in a cycle-rickshaw. When they reached Lions Hospital, a few boys who were playing Holi on the road threw colours on Ahmed’s wife.

“After Rahisuddin stopped the bike, Ahmed pulled up the boys for throwing colours on a woman who was not interested in playing Holi. This led to an argument between the two parties,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Shalini Singh.

As Rahisuddin and Sajid tried to pacify them, Krishnan (20) took out a knife and stabbed Rahisuddin in the stomach. The accused fled after Ahmed raised an alarm.

Ahmed first rushed an injured Rahisuddin to Lions Hospital, from where he was referred to the Safdarjung Hospital, which then sent him to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. He was declared dead on arrival, the police said.

After the hospital informed the police, a team headed by Inspector Brijender Singh rushed to the crime scene. During investigation, the Ravi’s name came up who said it was Krishnan who had stabbed Rahisuddin.

While Ravi and Krishnan are now in the custody of New Friends Colony police, the 17-year-olds have been sent to a juvenile home.

The police said Rahisuddin’s body was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem. Originally from Meerut, he had been working in Ahmed’s tailoring shop, Honey Money Top Shop, in Zakir Nagar for the last 11 years. He lived in Taimur Nagar and is survived by his wife and two children.

Boy beaten to death
In another fight over playing colours, a Class XI student was allegedly beaten to death in Nihal Vihar area of West Delhi. Police said Sonu (18) and his friends were playing Holi in their compound when a few boys from the locality warned them not to throw colours on outsiders. This led to an altercation and the boys started hurling stones at Sonu and his group and also beat him up with rods. His mother Patassi Devi (46), too, sustained injuries as she came to rescue him. The police said the accused fled after injuring Sonu on the head. He was then taken to the RML Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. His father, a labourer, identified the accused as Sunil, Harish, Rakesh and Manoj, but the police are yet to confirm the charges.

Saving women from colours by Siddhartha Majumdar on 14 Mar 2009

In the previous case, police should take action against Lions Hospital and Safdarjung as well. If they are not in a position to cater to such emergency needs, then we dont need such hospitals.

People should be more Careful on such occasions by Kamal on 13 Mar 2009

It is very sad news to hear that two life have been lost on the colorful festival of Holi. I think the best way to avoid such type of incidence for someone who is not interested in Celeberation is to avoid going out for 4-5 hours in the morning unless it is very necessary. Life is much more valuable than 4-5 hours of freedom on streets.

hospitals responsible by beljamine on 13 Mar 2009

sue all these hospitals for lack of responsibility and for causing the death of the man.Indians protest at everything, how about this case. where is justice?

Moral Values, Civic Sense, Respect, where are we heading in India? by Sumer on 13 Mar 2009

These are distorted activities of holy festival which is actually causing problem, we never celebrate holy with color's, ballon filled with stone thrown at a commutter in bombay train, causing loss of eye sight from lens damage, a muslim man stabbed, our nation seems to have lost moral and civic sense, these people need to be educated..Value based education imparting human values, civic sense and respect for other individuals need to be imparted. Often such incidences will flare up in riots depending upon neighborhood, the leaders and people of society should work together to solve these kind of undesired issues.

Treatment by Varun on 13 Mar 2009

"Ahmed first rushed an injured Rahisuddin to Lions Hospital, from where he was referred to the Safdarjung Hospital, which then sent him to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. He was declared dead on arrival"... Why was the person referred from one hospital to another? Was that the reason why the person died (lack of proper treatment)? No offense meant.. Just a genuine question...

No accountability by Ram Nath Babu on 13 Mar 2009

That is the exact reason for his death. Precious time has been lost in shuttling him from one hospital to the other. This is the way our government hospitals works. Government levy taxes on us from salt to everything and says these taxes are used for building hospitals and other infrastructure facilities. For whom they are building hospitals, if these are not useful for people? In India, 'sab chalta hai' - so no way you can escpate. If today it is Rahisuddin, tomorrow it may be me or you. Just wait for your turn.
