Kolkata The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Sushanta Ghosh, the former CPM minister and party MLA in connection with the skeleton recovery case in Garbeta. Ghosh was in custody since August 2011.

Granting the bail, a Division Bench of Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Gyan Sudha Misra said that Ghosh would not be allowed to visit West Midnapore district and his Assembly constituency Garbeta. Apart from it, Ghosh would have to visit the nearest police station to his residence on the last Sunday of every month.

On September 29 last year, the Calcutta High Court had rejected the bail plea of Ghosh following which, he had approached the apex court challenging the High Court’s order.

In June 4 last year, locals at Garbeta had recovered skeletons near the ancestral house of Sushanta Ghosh. Following this, Shayamal Acharya, a villager had claimed that one of the skeletons was that of his father Ajay Acharya, a Trinamool supporter who had gone missing on September 22, 2002. In the FIR Acharya has mentioned the name of Ghosh and other prominent leaders of CPM of West Midnapore district.

The CID took up the investigation and the DNA test confirmed the identity of Ajay Acharya and Swapan Singha, Trinamool Congress activist who had gone missing after the killings at Garbeta.

The CID then filed the charge-sheet in September last year against the 58 accused including Ghosh and other prominent CPM leader of the West Midnapore district. According to the charge-sheet, the CPM activist had killed at least six TMC activist on September 22, 2002 and they had buried those bodies beside a water body near the ancestral house of Ghosh, who was involved in the killing.
