Surat A 17-year-old Class X student committed suicide for fear of failing in the upcoming state board examinations, on Monday morning.

Mayur Maisurya, a resident of Bhaidas Mehta Street in Sagrampura in Surat was a student of Kadiwala High School and had failed to clear his board exams last year. He had failed in three subjects in the March 2008 exams.

He had assured his parents that he will clear the exams this year. He started doing the preparations, but was under tension, nevertheless.

The police said Mayur had dinner with his family on Sunday night and went to his room for study.

When his father, Subhashchandra, knocked on the door of his room on Monday morning and got no response, he peeped inside through the window and saw Mayur hanging from an angle in the ceiling.

Subhas shouted for help, which drew the attention of the other family members. The Athwalines police rushed to the spot and broke open the door and sent the body to the New Civil Hospital for postmortem.

Athwalines Inspector K M Desai said: “The deceased might have gone under depression for the upcoming exams due to the poor preparations and this might have driven him to take such a drastic step.”

Only recently, two students due to appear for the HSC science stream exam, committed suicide in Junagadh.
