Chandigarh The School Health Scheme, initiated by the UT Administration for a period of three years in 2006, seems to have succeeded in its task with several positive changes coming to light.

The scheme was aimed at providing preventive and curative services in 104 government schools of the city. At present, six teams are engaged in the process of health assessment of schoolchildren.

Comparison of the nutritional status has revealed that malnourishment has dropped from 51.6 per cent to 46.6 per cent. The total incidence of anaemia has come down from 30.2 per cent to 23 per cent, whereas intensive oro-dental counselling, diagnosis of dental problems and treatment has led to a decrease in the incidence of dental caries from 45.8 per cent to 34.9 per cent.

The main objective of the health scheme has been early diagnosis and treatment of medical problems, prevention of non-communicable diseases by diet counselling of mothers in schools and anganwaris. The scheme also aimed at promoting communication between parents, teachers and children for the overall well-being of the child. Students and the school staff were also sensitised about disaster management under the scheme.
