Following a complaint, the district magistrate of Solapur had ordered an inspection of the movie prints which were being screened in cinema halls. The Milind Gunaji-Suman Ranganathan-starrer movie had received an ‘A’ certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
However, during an inspection at the Bhagwati cinema hall on August 15, 1996, it was found that the uncensored version of the film was being screened. Following this, the prints were seized.
A day later, an offence under the Cinematography Act was registered against Bhatt and three others. The CBFC in September 2006 had stated that of the nine scenes which were deleted from the film, five had been re-introduced in the print that was screened at the cinema hall in Solapur. The trial court had rejected Bhatt’s discharge plea following which he moved the high court seeking to quash the criminal proceedings against him on the grounds that he was a producer and should not be held accountable for the screening of the alleged uncensored print of the film. The case is likely to be heard in two weeks.
