Principal Dr A C Vaid, welcomed Jyotsna Chander and appreciated her involvement in social projects of great value. A state-level ‘Women Leadership’ awardee from the University of Wisconsin and founder president of an NGO ‘Shama’ in the USA, Chander has been for the last 23 years, enlightening Americans about the Indian civilization.

Jyotsna Chander emphasised that ‘the character of the society is recognized by the way the people treat their women.” She highlighted the need to take one small step every day towards positive social change and appealed to the government to make our streets safe for women, especially at night. “Structural changes are required in our system to ensure empowerment of women by giving them opportunities to hold positions of power,” she said.

A dialogue followed her talk with the volunteers of the group. Subjects like female foeticide, dowry and property rights of females were discussed at length. Students confided that at times they feel helpless in front of their families when issues like dowry are discussed. Chander lauded the energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers and specially the male students for making a resolve to build social pressure against those who indulge in eve-teasing and disrespect women.
