Mohali In response to the protest of the residents of Phase 3-A against the government’s move to open a new school, Mohali Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Raghbeer Kaur Khaira on Monday recommended that no new school was required in the area.

In her report to the Deputy Commissioner (DC), the SDM endorsed the views of the residents, which were strongly supported by area councilor and Mohali Municipal Council senior vice-president Harman Preet Singh Prince.

They claimed that since three government schools were already in close proximity to Phase 3-A, the opening of new school at that site will not serve any purpose. Moreover, the site earmarked for the school was meant for the construction of a park.

Confirming the development, the SDM told Newsline that besides other objections, a narrow 10-feet-wide road leads to the proposed school site, which will not be able to cope with the heavy rush during school hours.

Taking cognisance of the residents’ protest, the DC had recently constituted a panel to take stock of the situation and submit a report.

Accordingly, the panel met the residents, led by Prince, who had pleaded that they will be deprived of a park to construct a school, which was not required in the first place.

They had suggested that the school be opened in some other area, where it was required, while the existing open green space, used for walking and outing by residents, be left “as it is” in the larger public interest.
