Ludhiana For the past three decades, he religiously travels twice a year to satiate his creative flushes. Meet 69-year-old businessman Satwant Singh Nandra, for whom photography is not merely a hobby, it is his lifeline.

“I travel to satisfy myself. Capturing myriad hues of life is what gives me the real high,” says the trader who manufactures sewing machine parts.

An avid traveller, this globetrotter has been to Maldives, Canada, US, UK, Netherlands, Kenya and Switzerland to give a vent to his artistic bent of mind. Nandra has currently displayed his works at Artmosphere gallery in the city.

“It was one such exhibition in 1983 that motivated me to take to camera seriously. I had been dabbling with camera since 1955 but this exhibition helped me set my mind on it and since then photography has been my religion,” says Nandra, who is never without his D3 Nikon camera.

A member of almost all prestigious photography association of the world, Nandra mostly shoots nature. “The decision is more out of compulsion. I used to shoot portraits too but many people objected to this, so I stick to captuting the mother nature,” explains Nandra.

His reason is simple. “Nature does not object when we admire it for hours. There is so much to shoot in nature; it opens up so many facets of colour and vision.”

This amateur photographer is a bibliophile but for books on photography. “I have read a lot about this art and continue to do the same even today to keep my self abreast of what is happening in the field.” And how he manages to stitch his passion and livelihood. “We all need to plan out a few things in life and strike a balance between obsession and duties. I know I have to travel twice a year and my business calendar is designed keeping this in mind,” says Nandra.
