The incident occurred around 1.30 am on Sunday, said Kaushik, when he had returned from a party and was opening his car using a key. “I was with a friend, whom I was going to drop at his residence in Sector 43. I opened the car and sat on the driver seat. Before I could start the car, a policeman knocked on the window. It took me a few seconds to open the door. The policeman started wielding his baton and broke the window of my car. He struck four times. I could barely save my eyes as the baton hit my forehead, right above the left eye. In an attempt to spare myself any injuries on the face, I sustained severe injuries on the hand. I shouted for help but before anybody could come to my rescue, he flashed a message from his wireless to the police control room and vanished,” Kaushik said.
Two PCR personnel reached the spot and recorded Kaushik’s statement. A written complaint was also lodged with the UT Police, at Police Post-22. Police, however, are yet to register a criminal case against the cop in question.
Meanwhile, SI Charanjit Singh, Incharge, Police Post-22, in whose area the incident occurred, had a different take on the issue.
“The policeman in question is Head Constable Amrik Singh. He does not drink. He had intercepted Kaushik and his friend near House No 2540 late at night. He asked them why they were loitering around so late at night. Kaushik told him that they stay in House No 2860 and went away. After a few minutes, Singh saw Kaushik opening a car outside House No 2834. He grew suspicious. Singh and Kaushik got into an altercation. Kaushik and his friend even manhandled Singh. During the scuffle Kaushik sustained injuries and the car window got smashed”.
