Chandigarh, March 3 The residents of Sector 47 staged a protest against the demolition drive, carried out by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) to remove encroachments today, and blocked traffic at the Sector 46-47 roundabout.

Arun Aggarwal, general secretary of Federation of Welfare Associations of Sector 47, alleged that the structures removed today were constructed some 10-15 years ago and the drive was carried out without giving any prior notice.

He added that instead of demolishing these structures today, the CHB should have stopped residents at the time of construction only.

The residents also raised slogans against the area councilor, Jatinder Bhatia, for failing to stop the CHB from razing the structures.

A CHB team and 25 labourers arrived at Sector 47 to demolish unauthorised constructions on government land. A police team also accompanied the CHB officials to prevent any untoward incident. During the day-long drive, unauthorised construction in around 40 houses was removed.

Residents tried to stop the CHB team from carrying out the drive but the heavy police deployment deterred them. The protest started only after the CHB team left.
