Chandigarh The New Year has come as a boon for the cricket-crazy Chandigarh as the UT Administration is all set to install the much-awaited floodlights at the Sector-16 stadium by the end of this financial year. Estimates have been approved and the tenders are likely to be floated in the coming few days.

The stadium, which hosted a one-day international match in 2007 after a hiatus of 14 years, was long deprived of the floodlights as the UT Administration was “short on funds” but the latest move will bring cheer to the region.

On upgrading the stadium in 2007, the Administration spent approximately Rs 5 crore and installed an electronic scoreboard and constructed a special media box. With the floodlights functioning, the stadium will be an attractive venue for more international matches.

Director Sports, Inderjit Singh Sandhu, said: “The Administration spent a lot on upgrading the stadium, which resulted in paucity of funds. Once the floodlights are in place, the stadium will match the best in the country and would be ready to host Test matches too.”

Superintending Engineer Sunderpal added: “The Engineering Department has provided an estimate of Rs 6 crore for the floodlights and the file is with the project approval committee. The lights will meet all the latest specifications of the International Cricket Council. The project is expected to take off in another fortnight. Apart from the ground, the practice area will also have floodlights, though the illumination level will vary.”
