Kolkata Security has been beefed up across Bengal for the Republic Day in the wake of the recent terror attacks.

This time during the Republic Day parade on the Red Road a number of closed-circuit television cameras have been put in place to keep a watch on the crowd.

“Security had been already tightened across the state after the Mumbai terror attacks and it has been further beefed up for the Republic Day. We have alerted all police stations, especially all district superintendents and the railway police,” Inspector General (law and order) Raj Kanojia said.

According to the police, additional forces have been deployed at important and crowded places. Besides, special forces will also be brought in on 26 January. Checking processes have also been stepped up. Sniffer dogs are taking regular rounds, especially at railway stations like Howrah and Sealdah, said a senior police officer.

Police commandos have been deployed in Howrah and Sealdah stations. In Howrah, GRP and RPF personnel have jointly started a security drive to check bags and luggage of commuters with metal detectors. GRP personnel have also been deployed near the ticket reservation counters. The entire security arrangements in the stations have been heightened, said Dilip Mitra, ADG Railway.

Bomb disposal squad personnel have been asked to be on high alert and be ready to rush to any spot within minutes in case of any emergency, an officer said.
