Mumbai A “blanket CCTV network” could soon cover the city, with cameras capturing images of every possible threat to security.

The state government on Friday formed a core group of eight members to look into the possibility of enlisting the aid of Indian Merchant Chambers (IMC) to set up such a blanket.

Since 26/11, the IMC had been discussing with the government how it could contribute towards the city’s security. It proposed setting up of a CCTV network across the city’s 2,000-odd roads and bylanes to monitor traffic and other movements. According to the proposal, the cameras would capture images along the roads which could pick suspicious movements and alert security authorities. Officials hope that this could help pick incidents like the landing of terrorists at Budhwar Park .

Officials said the network could later be used for issuing alerts to citizens in case of flooding and traffic jams.

The group, set up at a meeting called by the Chief Minister, will be headed by the additional chief secretary and comprises four members each from the government and IMC. It has been asked to give its suggestions in 15 days on setting up a camera network.
