Student leaders say that both girls and boys’ hostel are poorly guarded, particularly that of boys where outsiders have free reign of the place and identity cards are hardly checked by the guards posted there.
Deputy Chief Warden J.D. Wadhwa said, “We do not have any instruction to check identity cards of students to detect any outsiders and if there is any special instruction, I have not been informed as of now.”
Although at each of the16 halls of residence one security guard is posted, MSU Student Union leaders say it is not sufficient and that no new action has been taken by the authorities to improve the situation.
“The guards are not present during the day to check outsiders visiting boys hostel,” said MSUSU general secretary Rupesh Prajapati. Describing the security condition at girls' hostels, vice-president of the MSUSU Hiral Sarvaiya said: “Visitors are never asked for their identity by the guards present there. They (guards) are present only during the night.”
Accessibility to the authorities is also a matter of concern in the hostels. According to MSU Registrar A V Gupta, the security of the hostels comes under the Chief Warden.
However, Chief Warden D.P. Bharambe was not available for his comments.
Students claimed that a lot of illegal activities take place in these halls. The polytechnic hostels reportedly have been a den of bootleggers. On the condition of anonymity, many students said that outsiders come to the campus in the evening and make vulgar remarks on girl students.
While security in the university suffers due financial constraints, the Registrar said, “The security measures that have been taken in the campus after the CD incident is sufficient as per the budget.”
