Steps have now been taken to tighten marine security off the Somnath coast, said official sources. The temple is located on the seashore and after the Mumbai attack it was felt that marine security should be
further tightened as a precautionary measure.
Junagadh District Collector and District Magistrate Aswini Kumar has now issued an initial notification in this regard banning the movement of all types of boats up to one nautical mile off the coast. This directive even applies to fishing boats. The said area will be declared a no entry zone for any kind of boats, trawlers, ships and vessels after a final notification to this effect is issued.
The district magistrate has issued a primary notification in this regard and has sought information about any objection to the public as a result of this ban. The time limit for furnishing the same is March 6, said sources.
Junagadh Superintendent of Police Hari Krishna Patel had forwarded the proposal to tighten security at the temple considered a high security risk in the wake of the increased threat. The administration has deployed personnel from the local police and the State Reserve Police and installed metal detectors and closed circuit TV system at the site.
