Kolkata, December 31 Kolkata police have tightened security in the city to prevent any untoward incident on New Year’s eve. Hotels across the city are also taking precautions to ensure safety during the celebrations.

Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said today: “We have instructed the police to arrest rash or inebriated drivers. In crowded areas like Park Street and Esplanade, we have arranged for extra security. Plain-clothed policemen will make sure that there are no cases of eveteasing.”

The Park Hotel, where simultaneous New Year parties will be held at Tantra, Aqua and Roxy, has stepped up security. Additional guards and bouncers will be deployed to avert any hassles.

Hotel Hindustan International has also taken similar measures. “We will increase the security staff strength during the 31st night party,” said a spokesperson.

With thousands pouring into the Zoological Gardens and the Victoria Memorial, security on the premises was also tightened.

Keeping in mind last year’s incident in which Army personnel created chaos at a New Year party in the Park Hotel, Kolkata police have made special arrangements to keep trouble at bay. “Around 2,000 policemen will be on duty throughout the night all around the city. We have specialised teams for traffic control and crime management in place along with 50 patrol vehicles,” said DC (Headquarters) Vineet Goel.
