Seminar on religion discusses its role in solving social issues

Patiala, February 27 A Number of issues related to religion and social problems were discussed at the second day of the International Seminar on Religion and Human Social Responsibility. The seminar is being held at the Punjabi University.

Raghbir Singh Bains from a university in British Columbia talked about the role of religion in dealing with issues of foeticide, untouchability, domestic violence, drug addiction, rapes, adultery, prostitution and diseases like cancer and AIDS.

Andreas Bock-Raming from Mainz University (Germany) spoke about the Sarvastivada School of Buddhism and discussed philosophical interpretations on religion and responsibility.

Pradyumna Shah Singh, a faculty member of the Punjabi University discussed the role of the Jain Tirathankars. He said that monks (Shramans) into innovative human values in the people. Nirmal Singh from the USA delved on the paradigm of Sikh theology pertaining to socially responsible religious life.

Marion Meisig from Gutterburg University, Germany described how Buddhism transferred the ancient Hindu Vedic concept of asceticism into a concept of donation. Surjit Kaur Chahal from Pune University discussed the religious dimensions of the practice.

Ali Ihsan Yitik presented a paper on the Islamic viewpoint about religious pluralism.
