Series of aftershocks rock Gir forest

Junagadh, January 2 A series of aftershocks, measuring 3.8 on the Richter, rocked parts of Junagadh district, including the Gir forest region, on Wednesday midnight. Tremors were felt in some parts of the adjoining district of Amreli, Porbandar and Bhavnagar. No casualty or major damage has been reported so far, official sources said, but people, nevertheless, took shelter in the open throughout the chilly night.

According to Junagadh district disaster management control room, the first tremor was reported at 00.04 am. Thereafter six more aftershocks with magnitude ranging between one and three were reported in the area, particularly in the Gir region throughout the night. The epicentre of the tremors was noticed near the worst affected Hiranvel village located on the periphery of Gir forest.

Other places like Junagadh, Visavadar, Bilkha, Vanthali, Talala, Malia and surrounding areas also experienced the tremor. More than 15 villages received mild aftershocks throughout the night. Hiranvel, Chitravad, Haripur were among the three most-affected villages. The other villages, Aankolwadi, Moruka, Bhalchhel, Sasan, Jalandhar, Dharampur, Babara, Vandarwad, Amrapur, Devada, Ambalash and Katrasa, are located on the periphery of Gir forest.

According to reports, in Jalandhar village, walls of two houses collapsed while in some villages, houses developed minor to major cracks. Houses in Haripur, Chitravad, Sangodra and Hiranvel villages were comparatively damaged more.

When contacted, Junagadh district collector Ashwini Kumar said, "No major damage has been reported so far. However, official teams have been sent to villages to take stock of the situation. Adequate action has been taken and everything is well planned to meet any eventuality. There is no need to panic".

An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude struck Junagadh district on November 6 killing one and injuring several persons, besides damaging around 200 houses. The Gir region has been experiencing a series of mild tremors every day since then. According to officials, Talala town and nearby villages have experienced not less than 300 tremors till date.
