The team raided Anandbhuvan, Milan Dining Hall, Aaware Maratha eatery, Satyadev Canteen and Rajeswari Amrutulya and rescued four children below 14 years of age and three aged 17. The the employers have been under under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation Act), 1986.
While some of them could barely hide their grin, the others in the group remained silent. "I had come here with my grandfather who is now in Mumbai, while I stayed back here to work," said the 12 year-old native from Andhra Pradesh. A 17-year-old related his story of arriving in the city to earn money to send back to his parents, who work as agricultural labourers in Ratnagiri.
"The children are from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sindhudurg, Chiplun, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi. Most of them have been working and living in these restaurants for the past few months. The elder ones have been educated till class six and seven. A majority of these children arrive in the city, accompanied by a relative or a family friend from their native villages. The cases of children running away from home to work are rare," said Bagal.
