Ludhiana The attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team touring Pakistan has shocked the city's sportspersons as well.

Appalled at the terror unleashed in Lahore, the sports fraternity in the city wants India to boycott Pakistan as a sports destination.

Meanwhile, sports lovers in the city burnt the effigy of Pakistan government to register their protest and termed India's decision of not touring Pakistan as valid.

Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association (PBA), said, “What to talk about foreign players, even the common man is not safe in Pakistan. There is total anarchy and the Zardari government had failed to reign in terrorism. I think the time has now come when all countries should snap their sporting ties with Pakistan lest they want to risk the lives of their players.”

World Badminton champion, Arun Dhand, who also hails from the city said the attack has shocked everyone as this has happened for the first time in the history of sports. He condemned the Pakistan government for its negligence.

Harminderpal Singh, former international Hockey player, said, “This is the first time that sportpersons have been targetted. Sports promote the message of peace. The Indian government should severe all diplomatic ties with Pakistan.”

Ankur Kakkar, a Ranji player from the city, also condemned the incident. Kakkar said, “The incident proves that Pakistan is no longer safe. The International Cricket Council (ICC) needs to re-think about holding matches of the 2011 Cricket World Cup in Pakistan. The venue of the matches should be changed.”

Gagandeep Singh, an international cricketer from the city, while condemning this attack, said, “These incidents cause panic among players. Players would not be able to concentrate on the game as it would hamper their performance. He also demanded that all countries should initiate strong action against Pakistan for its failure to provide the security to the touring team.”

Sukhwinder Singh, former coach of the Indian football team, said, “Security should be the highest concern of Pakistan. It is a shocking act and Pakistan has sent a wrong message to the world.”
