Ludhiana, January 31 An overflowing sewer in the Feroze Gandhi market today stalled the work of the entire car bazaar and the nearby areas. Sewerage water could be seen spattered all over the place. The shopkeepers of the area complain that it is a long-standing issue, which is yet to be tackled by the Municipal Corporation.

Rajinder Sharma, a dealer of cars, said, “This affects our business. No client would like to visit this place to buy a car when he knows that the place is full of filth and the cars on display are standing in the middle of sewer water. We find it really difficult to reach our offices apart from getting foul smell all the day-long.”

Another car dealer Raja too reiterated the same views. “Two of my clients did not come to the market today because I told them that the market has been flooded with sewer water. This really gives a bad name to our business.”

Meanwhile, it needs to be mentioned that apart from the car dealers even the daily commuters had to park their vehicles in the sewer water.

Those who had to enter stock exchange and few others who had to go towards Kotak Mahindra Bank were also finding it difficult to make their way through the dregs.

The shopkeepers rue that MC team does superficial cleaning every time water overflows from sewer but nothing concrete has been done to solve the issue.

Meanwhile, Manjit Singh, executive engineer of the area, said, “We have not received any complaint regarding the overflowing sewer water. I will send a team to get this problem rectified immediately.” However no team visited the market today till the time of filing this report and the condition was still the same.

Singh however added, “Moreover in the past, during cleaning operations we find that dhabha owners throw polybags and other non-biodegradable material directly into the drain which results in choked sewer lines.

In addition to this, a number of vendors are also operating in the market. Still we will be able to find the details of this blockade once the line is thoroughly cleaned.”
