Amritsar, January 31 Expressing concerns over the ongoing tussle between Sikh high priests, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee executive today sought direct intervention of Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti to resolve the issue.

The SGPC that met under the chairmanship of its president Avtar Singh Makkar also reiterated that all matters relating to the community must be addressed and decided by the Akal Takht.

The executive resolved that they had respect for all the jathedars, but Akal Takht was the supreme guiding force and issues, including that of the Nanakshahi calendar, must be decided by it.

The emergency meeting was called in the wake of the tussle between Jathedar Vedanti and Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh over Nanakshahi calendar and maryada issue. "The Akal Takht should immediately intervene and take stern action, if required, to put an end to the tiff between the jathedars," said the SGPC.

Makkar said differences amongst the Sikh clergy were "unfortunate" and efforts should be made to dispel the doubts related to the supremacy of the Akal Takht.
