Gandhinagar Minister of State for Home Amit Shah assured the House on Friday that action will be taken against those found guilty in the recent incident in which the body of a Class VIII girl student was found hanging from the tree at Mokansinh Na Bhevada village in central Gujarat.

Replying to the debate on a special calling attention notice tabled by Congress MLA Hirabhai Patel, Shah said that persons responsible for the death of the girl will be punished after the police receives the FSL report.

The minister told the House that as many as 44 people have been arrested in connection with the arson and loot that took place on June 26 in the wake of the girl’s death.

A company of the State Reserved Police (SRP) has been deployed in the village to assist the local police to help maintain the law and order situation.

Members of the local Maliwad community, to which the girl belonged, had torched 17 houses of the Patel community in the village, alleging that the girl was raped and murdered by a youth from that community.

Since then, there has been a stand- off between the two communities.

Shah said a team of doctors had conducted the postmortem on the body. The death certificate revealed that “the provisional cause of death is asphyxia due to hanging. However, visera was collected and sent to FSL for detailed examination, and the final cause of death will be known after the report from the FSL”.
