The bilingual production in Bengali and English is about the tragic heroes of Shakespeare, and their tragedies . “What makes them so appealing is that none of his tragic characters are without their fallacies . They are flawed which makes them more endearing to the audience. Most of them are victims of their own excesses and self-deception. This is my tribute to all these heroes,” says Chatterjee. The name Knight’s Stand, of course, has been chosen as Chatterjee feels that “Shakespear’s heroes were the last knights of literature.”
The cast that includes names like Barun Chanda, Jagannath Guha, Tamal Roychoudhury, Biplab Dasgupta, Preeta Mullick and Parambrata Chatterjee, will perform a series of monologues that will be strung together by noted television personality Koushik Bhattacharya. The production will also give the audience the freedom to interpret these traditional heroes in their own way. While considering a monologue from The Merchant of Venice, it was Shylock who was chosen as the tragic hero. “More than any other character in the play I think it is Shylock who undergoes a lot of pain and suffering. He stands out from the rest of the characters by virtue of his strong character. Another monologue that I have chosen is the passage where Romeo tries to woo Juliet,” says Chatterjee.
The production will be held on January 12 at 8 PM at the Calcutta Rowing Club
