Lucknow, February 5 The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has turned down the Uttar Pradesh government’s request to investigate the high-profile Shashi murder case in which a former minister is the prime accused.

The agency has informed the Union Government that the case is not fit for a CBI probe. “We have written to the ministry in this regard and have also informed the state government on phone,’ said a senior CBI officer.

This is the second case referred by the Mayawati government that the CBI has refused to take up. The BSP government had earlier requested for a CBI probe into the murder of former MLA Raju Pal, in which former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmed is an accused. The CBI turned down the request on the grounds that the local police had already completed the investigation and had already filed a chargesheet. “There was no point in reinvestigating the case,” a CBI official said.

So far, the state government has recommended eight cases for CBI probe, of which the agency has accepted only one — the Noida plot allotment scandal.

Shashi, a third year law student, had gone missing on October 22. Her father Yogendra Prasad had accused BSP minister Anandsen Yadav of kidnapping her with the help of his driver Vijaysen.
