Pune Delhi-based Shiksha Bachao Andolan (SBA), a voluntary group of historians, intellectuals, teachers, students and parents has designed an alternate curriculum for sex education. A pilot project in this regard will start in Pune within four months, said Atul Kothari, joint convenor, SBA.

On the move, Kothari said, “This curriculum will have modules on personality development, health, lessons on how to control various desires along with a provision of personal counselling. Unlike the sex education syllabus proposed by the central government, this will have no reference to sex, but ensure that children are taught value-based education that is relevant in today's world.” The SBA has termed the curriculum 'Education for Personal and Social Welfare (with reference to sex education)'.

The committee to frame this curriculum will include teachers, parents, health experts, value education teachers, ayurveda practitioners etc. Kothari said that these committees would be set up in Pune, which will frame the syllabus by June 2009. “The syllabus will differ according to students' age group,” he said adding that the SBA will present this curriculum to the central and state government requesting them to implement it in their respective schools.

Kothari was in Pune to inaugurate a two-day national seminar on the same topic. Cracking a whip on sex education, Kothari said that sex education in India is merely copied from the West, when it actually has to be modified in sync with our culture. Justice Rama Joyce, who inaugurated the seminar also came down heavily on sex education. R P Joshi, principal of Pune Vidyarthi Griha (PVG) College of Engineering and Technology, Deenanath Batra, convenor of SBA, Swami Atmapiyanand and others were present for the function.
