Chandigarh, February 8 The Chandigarh Police on Friday arrested four persons on the charges of stealing vehicles and also recovered five motorcycles and two bikes from their possession.

Those arrested include a Shimla resident Nagesh, a small-time contractor, Raju and Pintu, both residents of Uttar Pradesh and Tota, a resident of Bihar.

According to the police, Nagesh was caught driving a Maruti 800 with a fake registration number plate. During interrogation, police discovered that Nagesh had actually stolen the vehicle from Chandigarh and affixed a fake number to evade arrest. Police also recovered one more vehicle from his possession, which he had allegedly stolen from Shimla. Nagesh would regularly come to Chandigarh to visit his relatives in Sector 7.

Raju, Pintu and Tota were also held for allegedly stealing a large number of two-wheelers in the city. The accused had also been held earlier on the same charges. They were in jail for about three months, before being released on bail.

“Soon after being released, they started committing the thefts again. We arrested them after a tip-off and five motorbikes were recovered from their possession. They are being interrogated for more information and we expect more recoveries,” said Inspector Sudershan, Station House Officer, Sector 34.
