Sources in the VMC Gas department said the contractor completed a drainage laying work at the same place where gas pipeline was laid. The drainage laying work at Sayajigunj circle opposite M S University's main gate caused a major damage in the main feeder line.
After laying the pipeline, the contractor did not fill up the land as per the specifications, which resulted into a leakage.
“The weight of the drainage pipeline was too much, which put a lot of pressure on the main feeder line below the drainage pipeline. This resulted in the damage. The contractor was ideally supposed to refill the land in a way that it does not pressurise the gas line,” said an official, who was part of the team that repaired the leakage.
“The leakage took place on Thursday evening and it was brought to our notice by a bank watchman. As soon as we got the message, we rushed to the spot and plugged in the major leakage,” said an official at Nandanvan gas station, headquarter of the Gas department.
The official added that the major repair work could be initiated only at 1 pm on Friday, “as we did not want to create problem for thousands of households by stopping the gas supply”. The supply was restored by 5 pm.
