Mumbai The brutal murder of a shopkeeper in Swami Naryan Nagar near IIT Powai has sent shockwaves throughout the area. The body of shopkeeper Shravan Devasi (28) was discovered by other shopkeepers of the Shiv Mandir area at around 8:30 in the morning. His head had been smashed and the wire of a Nokia phone charger was found around his neck.

The shopkeepers around Devasi’s shop started getting worried when he did not open his shop till 8:30 in the morning for he was always the first to open up. They started banging on his shutters but there was no response. They then moved towards the back door which they found open and saw his body lying on the floor. A large stone which had probably been used to smash his head was also on the floor.

The police are suspecting a man called Bansilal, a distant relative of the victim who would often spend the night at Devasi’s. Bansilal is absconding and the police are unaware of his whereabouts except for the address of his native village in Rajasthan. They suspect that an argument over money may have been the motive of the crime.

Police Inspector D Choudhry of Parksite police said, “So far we have found that they used to fight about money and the non payment of dues.”
