Ludhiana High drama was witnessed today in Feroze Gandhi maket when a Tehbazari team, which had come to the market to install grill at places where it had been removed, was forced to retreat by protesting shopkeepers.

The Car Bazar Association members who are using the area left open by the removed grills as a passage staged a dharna and did not let the team carry out the work. The dharna continued for more than an hour and finally the team returned empty-handed.

The Tehbazari team, it may be mentioned, had come following a court order because the Property and Traders’ Association of Feroze Gandhi market had filed a case in the the court, in which they had stated that grills had been removed at many places.

P.S Ghuman, joint commissioner, MC, who had come along with the team said, “We had brought grills etc so as to install new grills where it had been broken. It was observed that the grill had been removed at many places so as to leave open spaces which could be used by people as passage towards shops. But as the car bazar shopkeepers did not let us do our job, we had no choice but to suspend the operation for today.”

Meanwhile, the court hearing is slated for tomorrow and Ghuman said that the next action would be taken as per the directions of the court.

Following the protest by shopkeepers, the police force from Kochar Market, Division No. 5 arrived at the spot to keep a check on the situation. Due to this, even traffic movement on the main road also remained suspended for sometime, because the shopkeepers had come towards the main Ferozepur road as well.

The Tehbazari team also went in Field Ganj area and removed about 18 rehris from there. The shopkeepers however had gathered in the market to protest the drive and heated arguments were also exchanged between both of them.

The Tehbazari branch also removed temporary encroachments from outside the MC Zone A office as well on Wednesday morning. but only to see the encroachers stage a comeback in the afternoon.
