Chandigarh, March 3 Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today slammed the critics of Sachin Tendulkar, saying they do it just for ‘popularity’. “They do it just to gain popularity knowing Sachin is an icon,” Sidhu said lashing out at the critics of Tendulkar, who yesterday hit an unbeaten 117 to guide India to six wicket win in the first final against Australia at Sydney on Sunday.

Tendulkar had of late drawn criticism for his not-so-impressive form in the one-day internationals, but with his ton in the first final at Sydney the master batsman set a platform for India's first-ever tri-series win in Australia. Sidhu praised Team India for defeating Australia in their own territory and the Under-19 team for winning the World cup on Sunday. “It is not easy to beat Australia at its own field... but the men in blue have done wonders for the country,”he said adding that “now the senior team is just one match away from creating a history.” The present senior and junior cricket teams are shaping up very well in due course of time,” he said and hoped that they would soon become number one team in the world. While talking about the recent bidding of players for the upcoming Indian Premier League, Sidhu said his current passion was Preity Zinta, who recently bagged the bid for Mohali Cricket team. “I am bowled over by Preity Zinta,” he said.
