Kolkata Amartya Baidya (16) suffers from a rare genetic disorder — Congenital Parallel Nystagmus, which does not allow him to focus his eyesight on any object as his eyeballs oscillate constantly. With a limited vision of barely one foot, the teenager has stunned one and all with a commendable 89.3 per cent marks he scored in the Madhyamik examinations, the results of which were declared on Wednesday.

“When he was admitted to Kindergarten, doctors asked us to forget about his studies and help him concentrate on creative arts like music. Today, I am so proud my son,” said Amartya’s mother Manjushri Baidya.

Scores of 100 in mathematics, 98 in physical sciences and 92 in life sciences have surprised even Amartya.

“I knew I will do well, but did not expect to score nearly 90 per cent, “ says Amartya.

Doctors say Amartya does not possess about 80 per cent of visibility. But with a magnifying glass, the teenager reads story books and newspapers and also furthers his painting hobby.

The South Point High School, where Amartya studied, awarded him with the M P Birla Brave Hearts for his commendable efforts. With Amartya taking admissions in the Science stream of the same school, his mother’s worries persist.

“ I fear how will he carry on with his studies. So far he did not have subjects like physics and chemistry that needed him to do practicals,” said his mother. But, Amartya brushes aside the anxiety saying he is determined to become an engineer .
