Sarwan Singh Bhatia, who had flown down from Canada to testify in the case, yesterday completed recording his statement before Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar. Bhatia lost his son Gurubaksh Sheesh Singh in the carnage following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

He told the court that a mob of 300-400 had attacked his house at Paschim Vihar on November 1. Gurubaksh had fired in the air to scare the mob but was later dragged out of his house and attacked with iron rods and other weapons, Bhatia said. He said though he did not know the accused — Ishwar Singh, Sajjan Singh and Jagdish Singh — before the incident, he could recognise them. He also said that Ishwar, a customs official, led the mob.

During cross-examination, Bhatia said he did not name the trio in first FIR lodged at Nangloi Police Station three days after the incident since he did not know their names.
