Sikh women raise concern over low sex ratio

Amritsar, October 12 Expressing concern over the low sex ratio in Punjab, Sikh women intellectuals, at a seminar held here, urged the government to strictly implement the PNDT Act.

The seminar, which was presided over by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, was organised by Global United Sikh Women's Organisation.

Dr Paim Rajput, a researcher on women's issues, said India falls in the category of countries ranking lowest in terms of sex ratio in Asia Pacific, while Punjab had the most abysmal sex ratio in the country.

Gurbachan Singh said the women were responsible for the crimes committed against them, and they need to summon courage and be more vocal about the abuse.

Sikh scholar Dr Mohinder Kaur Gill attributed the practice of female foeticide to zamindari system, which was still in vogue.

Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur and SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur also spoke at the seminar, which was organised in collaboration with Chief Khalsa Diwan, SGPC, Gurmat Training Camp, Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha and Naad Pargaas Sri Amritsar.
