New Delhi, January 11 Young Nalini Singh was only second best, but that finish in just her second pro event was certainly praiseworthy. With a deficit of six coming into the last day of the DLF women’s tour leg 7 at the Army Golf Course, it was always going to be hard, but she did show her intent at the start. A birdie each on the first three holes meant that the difference in scores with leader Simi Mehra (in picture) was only one stroke ahead at that point.

But the inexperience finally did her in as she stumbled to a triple on the par-5 fifth and lagged behind in the race at her home course. Simi’s round of 76 on the windy last day put her aggregate score at 225 for three rounds. Nalini finished nine behind; this second place coming after the third spot in her first pro event in Noida late last year.

Chandigarh girl and last year’s tour winner Irina Brar was third, a further five behind. Simi struggled on the front 9, making the turn at 5-over. Three subsequent birdies — on the 14th, 16th and 17th — got her back on track.

Reena Singh was the winner in the Class B professionals, beating Pallavi Jain by 8 shots.
