Surat As part of the traffic awareness week celebrations, motorcyclists were given simulated computer lessons on how to ride the vehicles on the road and obey the traffic rules. They were also told of the speed to be maintained while riding in the city.

Surat-based lawyers and doctors had distributed pamphlets, showing the traffic rules at the junction points, to make people aware about the same.

The traffic department is celebrating a traffic awareness week which started from January 1. The city traffic police department had come forward to explain traffic rules to the riders with several new ideas and programmes. Several hand bills have been printed and distributed at the traffic junctions.

But, for the first time, the police department has approached doctors and lawyers of the city to participate in the traffic awareness week.

With the help of motorcycle distributors in the city, the traffic police department has set up temporary tents at different junctions where motorcycles riders are taught on computer with special software on how to ride the vehicle safely, maintain speed and traffic rules.

Quiz programmes have also been conducted at different multiplexes in the city for the people. The winners will be awarded gifts by the top most traffic police officer of the city.

Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Sahay said: “Earlier we were distributing pamphlets to the people and now we have requested lawyers and doctors in the city to take part in the traffic week celebrations. In the presence of the police staff, they will distribute pamphlets to the people at the different junctions.”

He added: “They will also guide the people about the charges to be laid against them if they violate the traffic rules. The doctors will also guide the riders on how to take precaution while riding on the road. We are conducting seminars at different colleges in the city to educate the students to obey the traffic rules.”
