Ludhiana As the debate on ‘child labour in reality shows’ rages across the nation, a pair of girls in Ludhiana seems blissfully oblivious to what’s brewing. Meet sisters Ekta Kapoor and Ritika Kapoor, students of Class IV and III respectively in R S Model Senior Secondary School Sashtri Nagar, who are trailblazing their way into the limelight.

The sisters already have quite a few films and teleserials in their kitty -Amar Hans’s Punjabi film ‘Pardesi’, telefilms ‘Pratibha Ki Kiran’, ‘Ambran de Taare’ and ‘Ye Kaisi

Kayamat’, a Hindi movie titled ‘Ishk Aisa Bhi’, ‘Char Sikandar’ a serial in Hindi, ‘Unchahi Dhee’ a Punjabi film on female foeticide, a Punjabi comedy with Ghulleshah ‘Valiaity Bukhar’ to name a few. The budding stars also have several music videos in their repertoire, including ‘Aashique Nemanne’, ‘Gaddi Challi Paunahari de Dwara Bhagton’ and ‘Mata Ki Bhetein’.

Modesty does not seem to be the girls’ strongpoint. “In Pardesi, we portrayed NRI children who hate coming to India. Shooting for the movie was a breeze — I gave my shot and the director okayed the first cut only; there were no retakes,” smiles Ritika.

Ekta replies in the same mould. She claims that she was offered a chance to work with superstar Amitabh Bachchan in an advertisement for a chocolate company, but was unable to accept the golden opportunity.

“I had to refuse. My final examinations are near and I do not want my studies to suffer. I have promised the company to consider their offer after the exams,” says Ekta. And such sagacity has not gone unrewarded. “The girls have made us proud and have set an example for others. After seeing their devotion towards studies, I have allowed a full concession in their school fees till Class XII,” said M L Kalra, principal of R S Model Senior Secondary School.

The girls’ mother, Poonam Kapoor, is a counsellor at Christian Medical College and Hospital and father Yashpal Kapoor works in a private company.
