New Delhi With at least half-a-dozen cases of luxury cars, including an Audi, being either jacked or stolen from upmarket South Delhi areas in the past two months, South Delhi police have upped vigilance and are looking for a possible gang operating in the area.

Police sources added that South district sleuths are conducting raids at several places in the Capital and a team has been sent to Mumbai to investigate the possibility of a racket behind the sudden spurt in cases of imported car thefts.

A car-jacking incident was reported three days ago from Anand Lok locality in Defence Colony area of South Delhi. A Honda Accord car was jacked from the parking area while its driver was sitting inside. The owner of the car, R S Prasad, has lodged an FIR at the Defence Colony police station.

Police sources said: “There were two unidentified assailants; one of them diverted the attention of the driver. As the driver stepped out of the car, the second person got into the driver’s seat and the duo fled the spot after threatening the driver with a knife.”

In January, an Audi car was jacked from Malviya Nagar area. The driver of the car was dumped in Sonepat area and the assailants fled with the car. He returned a day after the incident and an FIR was subsequently lodged at Saket police station.

Two luxury Mitsubishi Pajero cars, another Honda Accord and a Ford Endeavour car were jacked or stolen from Malviya Nagar and Greater Kailash areas of South Delhi. “We arrested one Khushmeet Rao Gharo, member of a car-jacking gang, from Sarojini Nagar area on March 2. The two main accused Lizo John and Ravinder, however, escaped after opening fire on the police. We are raiding several places based on the clues provided by their associate,” a senior police officer said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) HGS Dhaliwal could not be reached for comments.
