Six cases of chain-snatching in a day keep cops on toes

Surat, February 27 Six incidents of chain snatching reported across the city kept the police on their toes on Tuesday.

Kanchan Patel, on her way home via Dabholi Road, was intercepted by two youths on a motorcycle.

The pillion rider snatched her gold chain worth Rs 60,000 and sped away. A complaint was lodged with the Chowk Bazar police.

In a similar complaint lodged with the Rander police, Bharti Patel, a resident of Saraswati Society, said two youths on a motorcycle intercepted her and the pillion rider snatched away her gold chain worth Rs 40,000.

The modus operandi was similar in the third incident also where Jayaben Kahar, a resident of Machhiwada area in Nanpura, lost her gold chain worth Rs 40,000 to two motorcycle-borne youths.

Kahar lodged her complaint with the Athwalines police.

The three chain snatching incidents took place in a similar manner.

The victims were Menaxi Desai, a resident of Aradhna Society in Valsad, Shreya Patel from Ichhanagar Society in Rander and Kalpana Desai of Ayodhyanagar in Rander.

According to Crime Branch Inspector P M Parmar, “A special staff is on the watch to arrest the chain snatchers who have become active in the city in the last few days. We have also intensified patrolling in public areas.”

“It is suspected that an outside gang is involved in these activities,” Parmar added.
